How to Take Care of Indoor Plants During Cold and Rainy Season
Indoor plants may not be enjoying the wet cold and cuddly season as much as we do. In fact, the cold weather during mid- November to mid- February can be a bit stressing for them due to scarcity of some basic needs like sunlight. And of course, our plants stressing is us stressing too.
Here are some tips to take care of your indoor plants during this season.
- Place plants near window
Sunlight is number one food for plants, so that the rainy, cold season when sun is not too often in sight, can be a threat to their health. The first thing you want to do is to place them near the window so it will be easier for them to absorb sunlight.
- Clean leaves to absorb more sunlight
Placing your plants near the window is one helpful step; cleaning the leaves is another. Dusts and dirt on leaves block the sunlight they need therefore minimizing their intake. Since little sunlight is available during this season, you want to maximize the light they get.
- Place near a fluorescent
There could be 3-5 days in a row without the sun. If this happens, it will help to place your plants near a fluorescent bulb or set up one specifically for them. The light the bulb emits would suffice for the mean time.
- Do not over water
Believe it or not, there is always much tendency for us to over water our plants when they’re indoor thinking that, of course, they don’t get to soak in the rain. To ensure that the plant has about enough water it needs, check the moisture of the soil. It should be not soaked and not too moist to wet your finger.
- Cut down on fertilizer
If you are using fertilizer for your plants, you may want to cut down on fertilizer as well just like with water. During cold season, sort of hibernate and need less of water or fertilizer compared to during hot summer days.
- Watch out for pests
Some kinds of pests love the wet, cold season. Mites can be a big problem because they spread easily from one plant to another. Always check the leaves and stems and treat immediately if you find a problem.
It’s our cuddle weather but let us not forget to make our lovely plants feel our love too!
