CHRISTMAS, KISSES, AND MISTLETOES

Written by blog-editor on December 27, 2024 Posted in Blog

Lo and behold! Christmas is coming and everybody’s up to the fun of decorating for the season. The Christmas tree is top one priority, of course, but we’re hoping you didn’t miss one precious decoration just atop your door- the mistletoe!

This plant has become a popular icon of Christmas that it made it to the popular movies like Harry Potter.  It was used to decorate the Room of Requirement when Dumbledore’s Army had a session on 18th of December, 1995. Harry and Cho Chang shared a kiss underneath it and this became one of the unforgettable scenes in the movie. And guess what, there are more than hundred movies with kissing scenes underneath the mistletoe.

It also made it to the most popular Christmas songs like Mariah Carey’s All I want for Christmas is You and Justin Bieber’s Mistletoe. Speaking of, if you listen to the songs and you’re not too young to know this old belief, saying goes that those who stand and kiss under the mistletoe at Christmas eve will make it to forever.

But that’s if you do it right because there’s a proper way of doing it. Yup, you read it right.

In Victorian England if you refuse to be kissed you shouldn’t expect any marriage proposals for at least the next year, and many people would take you as future old maid. But it’s not just a kiss. So the belief goes too, there is a proper way of kissing under the mistletoe. After the two persons have kissed, they have to pluck one of the berries from it. Once all the berries are gone, the mistletoe no longer has the power to command a kiss. So if you’re planning to hang mistletoe this year, make sure to have a lot of berries in it.

Don’t you think this belief about mistletoe is fun? Now you know, you can play along with this tradition on Christmas!
