4 Flower Options for Valentine’s Day 2022
There are a lot of Valentine’s day flowers you can choose from. Here, we list four of the most popular ones in the country. But before that, let’s take a quick look at what the day means for us.
There are many celebrations in the Philippines that not only serve as a reflection of our culture but also as great mood lifters. We have fiestas, Christmas and New Year, and of course, Valentine’s day.
Valentine’s day, as we know it has a long history. Some accounts tell that the feast originated in a pagan festivity, and, intending to Christianize it, the Christian church may have dated the commemoration of St. Valentine’s death in the mid of February when the festivity was being held. Some accounts claim it was intended to just actually commemorate the saint. Today, we celebrate love, friendship, and family on this date.
Like in other festivities, there are practices on Valentine’s day that have later on become traditions we come to love for it gives us not only the hype of the celebration but also, its essence. One of these practices is giving flowers as a gift.
If the feast of February 14 came from a very long history, the use of flowers for several reasons in feasts is ancient. Fresh flowers are associated with different festivities- like how poinsettia is the star of the Christmas season.
Here’s a quick rundown of the four flowers you can consider making this celebration more meaningful.
1. Roses
They have become the star of Valentine’s Day for the longest time. This is no surprise. Red roses are almost always associated with romantic love across many cultures. Signifying passion, love, and desire, it was almost impossible to consider other blooms for the occasions some decades back. However, as we have become more creative and more accepting of contemporary ideas, we love roses in pink and blue as gifts during the celebration. Besides, you can never go wrong with roses.
2. Tulips
There’s a Turkish/Persian legend about a prince who fell in love with a beautiful girl. The girl, however, was murdered which caused the prince great sorrow. The desperate prince rode his horse off a cliff. Where his blood touched the ground grew a flower that since then was associated with deep or unconditional. This is how tulips made it to the list of perfect Valentine’s day flowers. Although few people know of the story, the beauty of the flower alone, which never fails to touch hearts, makes it a popular choice other than roses.
3. Lilies
Talking about beauty and a flower’s ability to give you a gentle feeling, lilies are still among the top choices. Different colors of lilies have different meanings. Red lilies symbolize love and passion and are a great alternative for red roses. Pink ones symbolize femininity and admiration. This color, along with red, is one of the most popular picks for Valentine’s day. Lilies are abundant in the Philippines, although more varieties from outside the country can easily widen the array of your options.
4. Sunflowers
While some may doubt sunflowers as splendid gifts for Valentine’s day, some prefer them for the refreshing mood they can bring. This is primarily based on preference. While roses, tulips, and lilies are classics, sunflowers can give off a different vibe. The meaning of sunflowers varies from one culture to another. In China, for instance, they mean good luck and lasting happiness, and in other countries, from admiration to joy and positivity. Wherever you are, however, sunflowers are popular gifts to loved ones to whom you want to express love and care.
This year’s Valentine’s day is special and perhaps a bit more meaningful. It’s because the pandemic has separated us somehow from our loved ones, families, and friends, and has made us realize even more how precious they are to us.
A gesture as simple as gifting a flower bunch to express how important they are and how much they mean can not only lift their spirit but appreciate themselves and this life more too.
