Brace yourself as we debunk one of the widespread misconceptions about Christmas tree.
Folks, putting a Christmas tree in the house during the season did not originate from a Christian belief!
Yup, you read it correctly. Long before Christianity emerged as a religion, early people like the Celts, the Vikings and the early Romans already had a special meaning to trees that remain green all year- even in the winter season. In fact, in many countries of the time, it was believed that these trees send away evil spirits, a belief that eventually led to putting one in houses.
The specific time when this used to be done is the winter solstice, the day with the longest night which usually falls on December 21-22. The ancient people had a belief that the winter solstice came because the sun god had become sick. They were celebrating the solstice because for them, it was a sign that the sun god is getting well. The green boughs serve as the reminder that the sun god would return well and strong.
Really, it’s a very long story even after this one. So who started the Christmas tree tradition as we know it today? Guess it.
It was devout Christians of Germany who brought decorated trees home for the Christmas. We’ve got to thank them, really, right? Here’s another bonus, did you know that Martin Luther was believed to be the first to put a lighted candle on the Christmas tree? If you didn’t, well we thought that surprised you!
Christmas trees have become the most iconic decoration of the Christmas, which we’d feel incomplete celebrating the season without.
